POTATO FROM ALAGONIA - KALAMATA


Potato from Alagonia - Kalamata

A special potato variety produced in the villages of Taygetos, mostly in Alagonia.

It is round shaped, thick peel, thus can be maintained for long enough.

It is cultivated for its edible tubers, which are rich in starch and consist food with high nutritional value.

The thing that makes potatos so special, is that they combine the characteristics of starchy foods and vegetables.

As a starchy food, they are rich in complex carbohydrates (starch), therefore they are a very good source of energy for the body. Their consumption contributes to the feeling of satiety, and strenghtens the healthy functioning of the gastrointestinal system.

The thing that resembles the vegetables is their content in vitamin C, B vitamins (B1, B6), folic acid and potassium.

If they are consumed unpeeled and roasted, they help the body to take advantage of their antioxidant actions and fiber, giving a better regulation of blood sugar levels.

Fried, baked, boiled or mashed potatoes, with or without peel, can consist a lunch or accompany meat, legumes, etc.

Note that it is a gluten free food.

Every year, the first Saturday after the 15th of August, a “Festival of Potato” is held in Alagonia.
